Assistant Clerk

Eleanor Evans, Esq. serves as Assistant Clerk for ABCD.  She has over 20 years’ experience representing nonprofit and for-profit organizations in a diverse range of legal, governance and compliance matters.  In her current role as Counsel at Hemenway & Barnes LLP, Evans provides practical advice to private foundations, public charities and other tax-exempt organizations on strategic initiatives and day-to-day operations. Prior to joining Hemenway & Barnes LLP, Evans served as ABCD’s General Counsel where she advised the organization’s senior leadership, program staff and board on legal, governance and compliance matters; reviewed and negotiated contracts; handled corporate matters for ABCD and its affiliated entities; counseled management on employment law matters; collaborated with outside legal counsel on real estate transactions; managed litigation, responded to subpoenas, and worked with insurers and outside counsel to resolve legal claims. Evans also served as Executive Director and General Counsel of Community Action Program Legal Services, Inc. (CAPLAW), an organization that ABCD helped to found and that serves the national network of approximately 1,000 Community Action Agencies, including ABCD. Prior to joining CAPLAW, she practiced with the Boston law firm of Hill & Barlow, where she represented nonprofit and for-profit organizations in corporate, tax and employee benefits matters. Evans received her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and her bachelor’s degree from Smith College.
